The traditional culture of China is the root of the Chinese nation. Traditional ink painting embodies the continuity and rebirth of aesthetic tradition across time. The exhibition begins with Song of the Great Wind. The depiction of a herd of horses galloping across frame reveals the magnificent vitality in the traditional art. Followed by the imposing mountains and crimson foliage, which depict the glorious landscape on this land, while the vividness and the simplicity in everyday life are gently illustrated through the portrait of the Hmong people and the ordinary scenery of heading home. These two distinctive subjects in conjunction with each other, compose the fondness for the land and life itself.
New times call for the cultural innovation. In the late 20th century, Chinese traditional Ink painting diverged into two pathways: Neo-Literati Painting and Experimental Ink Painting, both has advanced technically and thematically. The abstract ink wash is rich and lush in Galloping Horses. The confrontational stance of two steeds holds a striking energy, infusing traditional imagery with innovative modern composition and internal tension. Stepping into the 21st century, a large group of emerging artists came under the spotlight. They reshaped the essence of realism, reflecting social mood at the time.
Since its founding in 1997, He Xiangning Art Museum, as the cultural and artistic benchmark in Shenzhen, has been witnessing and participating in the pivotal progress of Chinese contemporary art from the 1990s to the early 21st century. Through a series of leading-edge and experimental exhibitions, the museum has constructed an accessible academic platform for the public to engage with outstanding Chinese contemporary art, and has gradually built up a representative and landmark collection of artworks.
Since its inception at Shenzhen Huangtian Airport in 1991, Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport has become the city's most important gateway for its development. It's a vibrant emblem of Shenzhen Speed and cultural economical development.
On the occasion of Chinese New Year, the exhibition is curated to link art across time. The Flow of Time features 28 artworks from He Xiangning Art Museum's contemporary collection, and presents them at the distinct site of Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport. Within the hustle and bustle of the airport terminals, the exhibition wishes to create a uniquely Shenzhen cultural memory for travellers.
