He Xiangning Art Museum is a national-level art museum named after the great 20th-century woman, He Xiangning. Opening in 1997, the museum established Female Art as one of its academic focuses. Since its establishment, He Xiangning Art Museum has hosted numerous thematic exhibitions and solo exhibitions of Female Art, witnessing the exploration and growth of 20th-century female artists represented by Zhou Sicong, Xiao Huixiang, Sano Nui(Japan), Chen Shuxia, Shen Ling, Yu Hong, Zhou Li, Yang Yanlai, Wei Lu, Peng Wei, Zhang Chunyang and others. Through specialized research and exhibitions on Female Art, He Xiangning Art Museum has gradually formed a collection of female artworks on a certain scale.
Today, we present a thematic exhibition of 20th-century Asian female paintings from our collection, showcasing 32 representative works/sets of female art from the 1980s to the present. The works cover a wide range of media, including Chinese painting, oil painting, watercolor, paper cutting, sculpture, video, installation, and more. These female artists come from diverse and representative backgrounds in terms of upbringing, education, age, and geographical location, resulting in works that are distinctive and full of individuality. It is not difficult to find that as a group, they have unique thoughts and expressions on issues related to their inner worlds, national cultural memories, and female identity and body.
He Xiangning Art Museum hopes that this exhibition will serve as a gathering point, both as a review of our past years of work in Female Art and as a new beginning for future endeavors in this direction. We cordially invite the audience to witness these outstanding works together, appreciating the eternity of art and the pictorial quality of life in the flow of time.
